Innovative Assessment Strategies in the Age of AI

A hands-on workshop delivered for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s AI Facilitated Learning Network. Instead of treating AI as something to detect and defend against, the session put it to work on the assessment itself: using generative AI to draft rubrics with Chain-of-Thought prompting, generate synthetic student responses to validate them, refine the instrument where it slips, and monitor performance over time — plus how to assess with objective items when a rubric isn’t the right tool, and where to draw the ethical line on all of it.

The session also included an interactive activity (build an AI-generated assessment in 15 minutes) and worked examples from TECM 2700.
